Knowledge is the best
baby shower gift

Most breastfeeding challenges don't start in the hospital — they start before baby arrives, when parents don't yet know what to expect. A prenatal lactation consultation changes that.

We walk you through exactly what to expect in the first days and weeks, how your body prepares for milk production during pregnancy, and what to do if things don't go perfectly at first. Because they rarely do, and that's completely okay.

Parents who receive prenatal lactation education breastfeed longer, experience less pain, and feel significantly more confident in the early postpartum period. This one appointment can make all the difference.

"The best time to learn how to breastfeed is before you need to."

What we cover in your visit

Every prenatal consultation is personalized to you — your pregnancy, your goals, your questions.

01

How Milk Production Works

Understand how your body makes milk, what colostrum is and why it matters, and how supply and demand keeps milk coming throughout your breastfeeding journey.

02

Latch Basics & Positioning

We walk through the most common holds — cradle, cross-cradle, football, and laid-back — so you can practice before baby arrives and recognize a good latch on day one.

03

What to Expect at the Hospital

Learn how to advocate for yourself and your baby — rooming-in, skin-to-skin, cluster feeding, and what normal newborn weight loss looks like.

04

Common Early Challenges

Sore nipples, engorgement, sleepy feeders, latching difficulty — we cover the most common issues so you know exactly what to do if they come up.

05

Supplies & What You Actually Need

Skip the overwhelming registry lists. We tell you exactly what's worth buying, what to skip, and how to set up your breast pump before delivery.

06

Your Personalized Feeding Plan

We work together to create a feeding plan that reflects your goals — exclusive breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, or just seeing how it goes.

When to book your visit

There is no single right time — but here is a general guide based on where you are in your pregnancy.

Around 28–32 Weeks

Ideal booking window

Early enough to absorb the information, late enough that birth feels real. Most parents feel ready to focus on what comes after delivery.

33–36 Weeks

Still a great time

If you have been busy with other prep, this window still gives you plenty of time to prepare and ask questions before your due date.

37+ Weeks

Better late than never

Even a consult the week before your due date is worth it. We can cover the essentials and make sure you know who to call when baby arrives.

Frequently asked questions

Is prenatal lactation education covered by insurance?

Yes — under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans are required to cover lactation counseling including prenatal education at no cost to you. Verify your specific benefits here or call your insurance and ask about "lactation counseling as a preventive benefit."

Should my partner attend?

Absolutely — we encourage it. Partners who understand how breastfeeding works are one of the biggest predictors of breastfeeding success. They can help with positioning, recognize feeding cues, and support you when things get hard. The more the merrier.

What if I am not sure I want to breastfeed?

That is completely okay. A prenatal consult is a great place to ask questions, explore your options, and figure out what feeding approach aligns with your lifestyle and goals — without any pressure or judgment. We support all feeding journeys.

Do I need to prepare anything?

No special prep needed. If you have a breast pump, have it nearby so we can review the setup. Otherwise just bring your questions — even the ones that feel silly. There are no silly questions here.

What if I have questions after the appointment?

All patients receive ongoing support access. And if you need a follow-up visit once baby arrives, we are always just a booking away at birthstonewomenswellness.com/pages/booking.
