How it works

Your benefits work
together for you.

At Inland Empire Lactation, we do something most practices cannot — we combine your lactation benefit with your Medi-Cal doula benefit so you receive truly comprehensive support without paying separately for each piece of it.

Whether you want an in-person doula at your birth, virtual birth support, prenatal appointments, or postpartum care — we coordinate it all under your existing coverage. Our independent doulas work alongside our lactation team so your care is continuous, connected, and covered.

And if you have Medi-Cal, there is even more: nine additional postpartum visits available through your doula benefit — visits we can enroll you in so your support doesn't end when your baby is born. It continues through the full postpartum period, with your doula able to write referrals for any additional services your family may need.

Doula support explained

If you want a doula —
we have one for you.

Our team includes independent certified doulas who work directly with our lactation providers. You don't need to find a separate doula — she is already here, already covered, and already connected to your lactation care.

In-Person Doula Support
at Your Birth

If you want a doula physically present with you at the hospital or birth center, we can provide that. Your Medi-Cal doula benefit covers an independent certified doula who will be with you in the room — supporting you through labor, advocating for your birth preferences, and helping you navigate the hospital environment with confidence.

She meets with you prenatally before your due date, attends your birth, and is there for your immediate postpartum needs. This benefit is separate from your lactation visits and costs you nothing.

Virtual Doula Support
From Anywhere

If in-person isn't what you need, or if you prefer to have your doula available via video, we offer virtual birth support as a fully covered benefit. Your doula is with you on screen — guiding, encouraging, coaching your support person, and providing continuous presence through your labor experience.

Many families find virtual doula support provides the emotional foundation they need without the logistical complexity of coordinating in-person attendance.

9 Additional Postpartum Visits
Through Your Medi-Cal Benefit

Here is the benefit most Medi-Cal families never know they have: nine additional covered postpartum doula visits available after your baby arrives.

We enroll you in this benefit directly — you don't need to navigate the paperwork yourself. Once enrolled, your doula can provide continued postpartum support visits, and can also write referrals for any additional services your family needs, including:

  • Continued lactation support coordination
  • Mental health referrals
  • Home health services
  • Additional specialist referrals
  • Community resource connections
  • Ongoing postpartum emotional support

This means your support doesn't end at discharge. It continues through the full postpartum period — with a knowledgeable doula by your side who can advocate for your needs and connect you to whatever your family requires next.

How we enroll you

When you verify your benefits with us, we check your eligibility for both your lactation benefit and your Medi-Cal postpartum doula visits. If you qualify, we handle the enrollment — you just show up for your appointments.

"You shouldn't have to choose between a doula and a lactation consultant. With us, you don't have to. Both benefits are yours — and we make sure you use them."

How your benefits work
from pregnancy through postpartum

When your lactation and doula benefits are coordinated by one team, the whole experience is more continuous, more supported, and more effective.

During Pregnancy

Prenatal lactation education covered by your benefit. Prenatal doula appointment to discuss your birth plan, preferences, and questions. Meet your full support team before baby arrives.

During Your Birth

Your doula is with you — in person at the hospital or virtually. Continuous labor support, advocacy, and guidance. We make sure your birth preferences are heard and respected.

Day 1–7 Postpartum

In-hospital lactation visit in those critical first hours. Home visit within the first week. Your lactation provider and doula coordinate so your care is seamless from hospital to home.

Weeks 1–12 Postpartum

Follow-up lactation visits for latch, supply, pumping, and any challenges that arise. Postpartum doula visits for emotional support, recovery, and referrals to any additional services you need.

Returning to Work

Covered consultation to build your pumping schedule, stash strategy, and bottle introduction plan before your first day back. Your benefit doesn't end when your leave does.

Ongoing Support

Nine additional covered postpartum doula visits available through Medi-Cal. Continued lactation support as needed. Referrals for mental health, home health, or specialist services written by your doula.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I really pay nothing out of pocket?

For most Medi-Cal and IEHP families — yes. When your lactation and doula benefits are billed correctly by a credentialed team, the cost to you is $0. No copay, no deductible, no coinsurance. We verify this before every first visit so there are no surprises.

I didn't know I had a doula benefit. How do I find out?

Most Medi-Cal families don't know this benefit exists because the system doesn't advertise it. When you submit a verification request with us, we check both your lactation coverage and your doula benefit eligibility as part of the same process.

Can I have an in-person doula at the hospital?

Yes. Our independent certified doulas provide in-person hospital birth support as a covered Medi-Cal benefit. She will be with you through labor and immediate postpartum — advocating, supporting, and guiding you through the experience.

What are the nine postpartum visits and how do I access them?

Medi-Cal provides nine additional covered postpartum doula visits for eligible members. We enroll you directly — no paperwork on your end. Once enrolled, your doula provides continued postpartum support visits and can write referrals for any additional services your family needs during recovery.

Is the doula benefit separate from my lactation visits?

Yes — completely separate. Your doula benefit and your lactation benefit are two distinct covered services. Using your doula benefit does not reduce your lactation visits. We coordinate both together so you receive the full scope of support available to you.

What can my doula refer me to?

Your doula can write referrals for mental health services, home health, specialist consultations, community resources, and other support services your family may need during the postpartum period. This referral capability is one of the most valuable and underutilized aspects of the postpartum doula benefit.
